Wake Up Your Garden in February
If you’re impatient for your garden to wake up in the spring, you’re not alone. In Missouri, the weather warms up and makes us wish for spring, only to drop back down to freezing the next week. Spring doesn’t come into full swing until May. But if you plant the right plants, it will feel like spring came early!
There is a lot of variation to when different plants bloom in different parts of the state, and even different parts of your yard. Additionally, some plants will bloom early, but their peak blooming season can be a month or more later. That said, below is a non-exhaustive list of everything we’ve seen bloom in February, March, and April in Southwest Missouri.

Planning Your Garden
To get color in your garden for the spring, you need to think ahead. Bulbs like Tulips, Hyacinth, and Daffodils have to be planted in October or November. Hellebores can be planted in September. Pansies, on the other hand, can be planted in early spring, but will probably die in the summer.
The Missouri Botanical Garden has a chart of many more flowers and which months they bloom. We’ve noticed that some things bloom a few weeks earlier than reported on this chart, but it is still a good reference.
If you want flowers for as long as possible throughout the year, you should also plan to plant Fall Annuals, such as Mums, Pansies (again), Ornamental Cabbage, and Ornamental Pepper. For color in the winter, consider evergreen shrubs or shrubs that produce berries, like Holly or American Beautyberry.
